ABOUT THE SHOW:

Sofia was recently hired as an empathy coach at a debt collection agency—and clearly, she has her work cut out for her. These employees can barely identify what an emotion is, much less practice deep, radical compassion for others. And while they painstakingly stumble towards enlightenment, someone keeps mugging Eva in the kitchen. An outrageous comedy about the absurdity—and the danger—of a world where some people’s feelings matter more than others’.

CHARACTERS:

Sofia (Female presenting, 20s-early 30s) - A newly hired empathy coach at a debt collection agency. While initially optimistic, she grows tired of their absurd lack of compassion and becomes complicit in their behaviors.

 

Eva (Female presenting, 20s-early 30s) - A female employee who is constantly “mugged” in the office kitchen. She uses intense defense mechanisms to make it through her day, often seeming cheerful and bubbly in opposition to her trauma.

 

Jon (Male presenting, 30s-50s) - The boss of the office. He seems charming on the outside with a “nice guy” persona until he is opposed in any way.

Howie (Male presenting, 20s-30s) - Male employee of the office that represents the severely angry aspect of toxic masculinity.

​

Jordan (Male presenting, 20s) - Male employee of the office that represents the “poetic, gentle” mask that toxic masculinity puts on.

​

Sofia’s Mother (Female presenting, 40s-50s) - Leaves desperate voicemails for Sofia, expressing her personal struggle with her divorce from Sofia’s father.

​

Janie (Female presenting, 40s-50s) - A mysterious missing figure from the office. She is described to have “snapped” and gone “crazy”. She makes an appearance in the final scene of the play.

​

Old Man (Male presenting, any age) - a 130 year-old man who represents classic toxic masculinity, expressing why he is unable to describe emotions and why he must then express them through violence.
